Copenhagen Fashion Week begins on 4 August, setting the stage for a season of global fashion weeks including London, New York, Paris, and Milan. So, it is timely that on 1 August 2025, BIIAB will launch the BIIAB Award in Fashion and Textiles (Sewing and Textiles) at SCQF Level 4 (R895 04) in Scotland.
This is a significant development, as it makes our industry-led qualification accessible to learners north of the border for the first time, further strengthening the fashion and textiles sector across the UK. The availability of this qualification in Scotland has been made possible through dedicated industry collaboration and the pivotal involvement of UKFT (UK fashion and Textile Association).
Addressing Industry Demand
At BIIAB, we recognise the industry’s need for practical training and are dedicated to developing qualifications that prepare individuals for the workplace. Our new qualification directly supports a wide range of manufacturing sub-sectors crucial to the fashion supply chain, including sewn products, leatherwork, footwear, textile manufacturing, soft furnishings, surface patterning, and textile care services.
The Skills and Education Group Awards Level 1 Award in Fashion and Textiles (Sewing and Textiles) and the Skills and Education Group Awards Level 1 Certificate in Fashion and Textiles (Sewing and Textiles) have already seen significant uptake across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with over 1,700 learners registered for the Award and more than 600 for the Certificate since 2019. These statistics demonstrate a demand for skilled professionals in a sector that continues to innovate and drive economic growth.
The Product Development team at BIIAB has been working collaboratively with UKFT since 2023 to develop and adapt this new qualification for the Scottish system.
Industry Endorsement and Impact
Creating this qualification for Scottish learners demonstrates the power of collaboration and our commitment to meeting industry needs across the UK. We are incredibly proud of the BIIAB Award in Fashion and Textiles and its proven ability to equip learners with the practical skills required to make an impact in this dynamic sector.
John West, UKFT’s Director of Skills and Training, a key partner in the qualification’s development, expressed his enthusiasm:
“This marks a pivotal moment for skills development in Scotland’s fashion and textiles sector. UKFT has been delighted to work with Skills and Education Group Awards and BIIAB and many key partners from throughout the industry to ensure that this qualification is now truly UK-wide. It reflects the collective vision of industry partners working together to build a more sustainable and skilled workforce.”
Michael Cusack, Chief Sustainability Officer at ACS Clothing, highlighted the practical benefits:
“This is a huge win for the sector in Scotland. The ability to deliver this at SCQF Level 4 with potential funding support really is a game-changer, especially for pre-apprenticeship pathways. It gives us a proper stepping stone to engage and support young people into meaningful training and employment – and solves a real gap we’ve all been wrestling with.”
The collaboration with industry experts and UKFT has ensured the qualification retains its industry-developed structure and flexible, mix-and-match approach, allowing learners to select three units tailored to local employment needs and personal interests. It reflects current industry practice, providing a solid base of transferable technical skills vital for success in this dynamic global industry.
The BIIAB Award in Fashion and Textiles (Sewing and Textiles) at SCQF Level 4 will be available from 1 August 2025, ready to empower the next generation of fashion and textiles professionals in Scotland, contributing to the vibrant and essential fabric of the global fashion industry.
